 Apopka is one of the fastest growing communities in central Florida. Between 1990 and 2000, the population of this beautiful town of orange groves and green forests doubled from 13,000 to more than 26,000 residents.
The town name comes from the Seminole Indian word for “potato eating place” and is only 15 minutes from downtown Orlando, in Orange County.
Apopka was originally settled by Spaniards in the 16th century – but these settlers were later devastated by disease and war. In was not until after the Civil War that the town was again a permanent settlement, when the Armed Occupation Act granted 162 acres to new pioneers.
Agriculture, ferns at first and then imported tropical plants, quickly became the main industry and Apopka remains a grower’s paradise to this day.
Today the city is known as the “Indoor Foliage Capital of the World” and features a strong mayoral form of government. It is home to many of the areas best golf courses and verdant parks, including the beautiful Wekiwa Springs State Park and Rock Springs Park. With eight major trails ranging from 2.2 miles to 29 miles, these mark the beginnings of what will be a trail ring around Central Florida.
