Azalea Park is a small community that is located approximately five miles from downtown Orlando by the East-West Expressway/State Road 408 toll road. According to the 2000 census, Azalea Park is home to 11,073 residents. This well-established neighborhood boasts many lovely older ranch-style homes. An azalea is a beautiful flower that blooms in the early spring time in Florida and this wonderful neighborhood has watched the Orlando downtown bloom at an astonishing rate.
Many of the homes in Azalea Park were built in Orlando's early boomtown days in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1962 the Orlando Jetport was built from a portion of the McCoy Air Force Base; today it is better known as Orlando International Airport. In 1968 Orlando had a naval presence with the Naval Training Center Orlando; the base closed in 1999. In 1965 Walt Disney announced plans to build what is now world-famous Disney World.
Azalea Park's ideal location is approximately seven miles on State Road 436 to Orlando International Airport; about 14 miles to Interstate 4 along the East-West Expressway and a 90-minute trip west on Interstate 4 will take you to the shores of Tampa Bay. Azalea Park is also close to the beaches of the east coast, about one hour from both Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach.
Beaches, theme parks, shopping, fine dining, golfing, fishing, and many outdoor opportunities are nearby in every direction for Azalea Park residents. The Lynx Bus System also offers local transportation to this community of Orange County residents for easy travel within the city.
Part of the Orange County School System, Azalea Park has many schools including three public elementary schools; two public middle schools, one that is for grades sixth through eighth and one school that serves grades sixth through twelfth called the Beta School; three high schools including the Beta School, Colonial Ninth Grade Center, and Colonial High School for grades ten through twelve.
